It’s amazing to think that it has been a full year since we left southern Illinois for the west. It was July 1, 2015 that our family arrived in Las Vegas. We have served a full year here at Providence Reformed Church. And God has blessed us in a great variety of ways.
Here is a quick update for the month of June, 2016,.
The most exciting thing that happened in the month of June for the family was Abigail and Josiah going to Ironwood Camp in California. This campground in the California desert reminded us of the old west. There were horses, desert sands, and tumble weeds. The kids had the opportunity to ride horses, swim in the lake, practice archery, sleep under the stars, make new friends, and much more. Both received nice notes from their camp counselors affirming them in their strengths and reminding them of the biblical lessons they learned while away. This was especially nice for Josiah who was away for camp for the very first time.
In June, Abigail shared with us that she was having some pain and popping in her jaw. She has been to the dentist, and has been referred to an oral surgeon. We expect that, when she meets with the specialist, she will be able to find out how she may have done damage to her jaw. Please pray with us that the solution to this problem will be easy.
We celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. It’s amazing to think that these 16 years of marriage have taken us from Chicago to Louisville to South Korea to rural southeastern Illinois to suburban St. Louis and now to Las Vegas. God has always been faithful to us and has continually amazed us with how he allows us to serve him. We are grateful to him for all that he has allowed us to see and do over the years.
We celebrated Father’s Day by enjoying some burritos and talking with the kids about their camp experience since they had just come home the day before.

Over the summer, our family is hosting a series of Bible studies we are simply calling Summer Psalms. Folks for the church come here every other Wednesday evening, and we work together through a Psalm. We are all finding that, in the middle of the long, hot summer, the sweet texts of the Psalms are refreshing to our souls. And, yes, Travis did choose which Psalm to study one Wednesday by rolling dice—an action that has had people say to us that Vegas really has rubbed off on us.
In June, Travis and Mitzi were able to visit the Women’s Resource Medical Center of Southern Nevada, a gospel-centered crisis pregnancy center that our church supports. There we met leaders, saw the facility, and heard about the organization’s mission. This group reminded us fondly of our dear friends at Life Network of Southern Illinois. We are praying about how our family might connect with this group and serve together to help save lives and care for those in need. If you would like to learn more about this group, visit http://www.wrmcsn.org/.
Also in June, our church had the joy of another baptism service. A family who lives near us and who attends PRC welcomed the whole church to their home and pool for a lovely, outdoor baptism. Of course, it probably helped that Jason, the father of the family, was the one being baptized. We enjoyed singing together, fellowshipping with one another, and obeying Christ’s Great Commission. And the kids enjoyed a couple of hours in the pool afterward.
Our church is seriously praying about our meeting location. For the past couple years, the church has met at a middle school in Henderson, the southeast side of Las Vegas. However, many of our members live more to the west and northwest of the city. We recently had an opportunity to meet with leaders at the Walter John Middle School, and will soon ask our church if they would prefer that school’s more central location. Please join us in praying that the decision about our location will be easy and that we will meet where we can most honor God, serve our people, and reach the community.
We treasure your friendships and your prayerful support. Please pray for us the following:
Pray that God will continue to provide for our needs, protect us from harm, and place us exactly where he wants us.
- Pray for Abigail’s jaw and her trip to the specialist.
- Pray for our church as PRC decides on a new meeting location.
- Pray that God will open doors for us to form more friendships and have more opportunities to share the gospel.
- Pray that God will grow our church in maturity and by adding new people to our church body for his glory.
We would love to hear from you all. Drop us a line and let us know how you are and how we might pray for you.
